The Funeral |
- Walt attends the funeral of his wife
- his two sons and their families don‘t really care about Walt‘s grief for his wife and their mother
- Father Janovich explains that Dorothy made him promise that he would try to make Walt go to a confession
- Walt is rather furious at that, believing that Janovich doesn‘t know anything about life or death
- wants to be called "Mr. Kowalski" instead of just "Walt"
doesn‘t really know Janovich and doesn‘t want to know him either

The Hmong Neighbours |
- Walt is living next to Hmong people
the shy Thao Vang Lor, his sister Sue and their mother and grandmother
- Thao is being confronted by a Hispanic gang
the Hmong gang around Thao‘s cousin Spider frightens them and makes them escape
- Hmong gang wants Thao to join them
as initiation, Thao is supposed to steal the 1972 Gran Torino Sport of Walt
- Thao is not able to do so because Walt notices him and points a rifle at him, Thao flees
- Spider and his gang come back to Thao‘s house
Thao and Sue try to talk to them, in vain
- gang tries to assault Thao
family tries to intervene
- Walt enters the scene and threatens the gang with a rifle, forces them to get off his lawn
- they leave, but not without warning Walt to watch his back

Thankful Community |
- Walt seems impatient and grumpy, claiming that he just wanted to get rid of that pack
- Hmong neighbourhood hears of what Walt did for Thao and his family
thank him by giving him gifts (dishes and plants)
- Thao admits that he wanted to steal Walt‘s car
Walt just wants to be left alone
- upon Father Janovich‘s visit and upon reminding Walt of the confession Dorothy wished Walt to make, he refuses

Hypocritical Family |
- Walt‘s son Mitch and his wife Karen come to visit for Walt‘s birthday
bring gifts and cake
- gifts are supposed to show Walt that he is getting older, Mitch wants him to move to a retirement home
- Walt sees this approach as a means for Mitch and Karen to claim the house, throws them out with all they brought with them

The Rescue I |
- Walt sees Sue being molested by three black teenagers and intervenes to help her
points a gun at them, they leave
- Sue thanks Walt for him stepping in, learns that it is his birthday and invites him to a family barbecue
- during barbecue, Walt gets to the know the family and they show him Hmong culture
explain that they fought on his side during Vietnam war
- next day, Sue, Thao and their mother come over to Walt‘s house in order to make Thao atone for the attempt to steal the car
Thao is supposed to work for Walt for one week
- Walt makes Thao clean up the streets and also shows Thao the American way of life for men
- Walt happens to get Thao a job at a construction side and also manages to make Thao ask out another Hmong girl

The Assault I |
- Walt discovers that he is coughing blood and visits a doctor
- health is not in the best shape, Walt tries to call his son Mitch and fails at the attempt of telling Mitch what is going on
Mitch and Karen do not care about the small talk, hang up because they are too busy talking
- Hmong gang still wants Thao to join and pressures him
rob him and burn Thao‘s face with a cigarette after going home from work one day
- Walt notices what has happened, heads to the gang‘s house and confronts Smokie
beats Smokie up and revenging Thao
- gang returns to the Vang Lors‘ house, shoot around and thus wounding Thao
- Walt hears someone shooting and storms to the family‘s house to check on them
hears about Sue never having made it back to the house
- a few minutes later, Sue is thrown out of another of the gang‘s cars
had been beaten and raped
- family doesn‘t want to report that to the police
- Walt is furious, punches cupboards at his home and hurting his knuckles
- Father Janovich is seriously concerned about Walt and Sue as well after he visited Walt at home
- Walt and Janovich talk openly
Janovich is now allowed to call Walt by his first name

Getting Ready |
- Thao is outraged about what has happened to him and his family
wants to take vengeance with the help of Walt
- Walt explains that they should plan the revenge carefully and that Thao should return later
- Walt gets a haircut, buys a tailored suit, goes to church and asks for confession
- confesses some minor sins and Father Janovich prescribes a penitence prayer

Taking Precautions |
- Thao returns to Walt‘s house and receives Walt‘s Silver Star medal
Walt locks him in the basement due to the fact that he doesn‘t want Thao to live with the guilt of having killed someone
- Walt himself had made such an experience back in the days of war when he killed a young soldier who just wanted to give up
- Walt brings the dog Daisy to Sue‘s grandmother and calls Sue from a bar, telling her about Thao and where the keys to the basement are

The Quiet Before the Storm |
- Father Janovich can be seen in front of the gang‘s house and two police officers in the meantime
- had informed the police office that Walt might want to take revenge with Thao by confronting the gang with a shootout
- yet nothing happens, no shootings, no gang appears, so the police officers leave with Janovich
- Sue lets Thao out of the basement and he tells her why Walt left him there
hurry to get to the gang house

The Final Shooting |
- Walt confronts the gang for the shooting and for the rape of Sue
neighbours come out to watch the spectacle
- Walt takes out a cigarette and asks the gang for a lighter
reaches into his jacket
- gang believes that Walt attempts to shoot them and gun him down
- Walt is seen lying dead on the ground
had grabbed a lighter instead of the presumed gun
- Thao and Sue arrive at house, police had arrested the gang members
gang members will be imprisoned for a while due to the murder of an unarmed man
- Thao stares at Spider and Smokie

The Final Payback |
- scene shows Walt‘s funeral and Father Janovich holding a notable eulogy
- Walt‘s family is present as well as Thao and his family
- Walt‘s will demands that his house belongs to the church now and that the Gran Torino goes to Thao
his family (related by blood) is disappointed and confused
- final scene: Thao can be seen driving the car along Lake Shore Road with Daisy
