  • Winston had feared before that his colleague, the linguist Syme would be arrested one day because he was very unconcerned about his opinion
  • Now, amid the preparations for "Hate Week" (p. 148, l. 11), Syme suddenly disappears, and Winston feels confirmed in his concern
  • Meanwhile, the "Hate Week" (p. 148, l. 11) is in full swing, and the hostile state Eurasia fights Oceania with missile bombs many innocent people have to leave their lives
  • While the war rages outside, Winston and Julia make love undisturbed in their room above Mr Charrington's store
  • In the meantime, Winston could imagine taking Julia as his wife, provided that his ex-wife would die
  • However, the couple also talks about the party. While Winston is very impressed by characters like Emmanuel Goldstein, Julia cannot imagine that Goldstein should exist. In her opinion, both "Big Brother" (p. 3, l. 22) and Goldstein are fictitious persons whom the party uses only to polarise the people

  • At work in the Ministry, a conversation ensues between Winston and O'Brien, who inspires enormous respect in Winston
  • They talk about Winston's work at the "Ministry of Truth" (p. 45, l. 28) and O'Brien is very interested in the work Winston is doing. O'Brien also offers to give the protagonist a new dictionary in "Newspeak" (p. 51, l. 16)
  • To give Winston the dictionary, however, Winston would have to come to O'Brien's private flat
  • Since Winston is firmly convinced that his interlocutor is working underground against the regime just as he is, he suspects a secret parley behind O'Brien's invitation
  • Winston fears that O'Brien will soon be captured by "Big Brother" (p. 3, l. 22) informers. But he decides to visit his new friend at his home anyway
