- The next morning, Winston encounters Julia in the hallway, who slips him a paper note as she pretends to trip
- The note contains the words "I love you" (p. 116, l. 5), and after Winston has recovered from his initial shock at the all-changing news, he throws the piece of paper into a "memory hole" (p. 116, l. 7)
- Throughout the morning, Winston finds it enormously difficult to concentrate on his work. After lunch, however, he receives an order that demands his full devotion, which can distract him somewhat
- The protagonist feverishly considers how he can arrange a meeting with Julia. The thought of the young woman's love fills Winston with a new sense of life, and back at home in his home, he can rejoice inwardly about Julia's confession of love
- A few days after the two lovers meet, Winston manages to arrange a date with Julia in the canteen without anyone noticing. Amid a crowd caring for Eurasian prisoners of war and taking no notice of the two, Winston and Julia meet
- In the bustle of the crowd, no one notices that Winston and Julia arrange to meet again outside the city

- On the 2nd of May 1984, Winston Smith goes to meet Julia outside the city. They meet in a clearing in the forest, where they become intimate for the first time and enjoy togetherness for a few hours
- The two exchange their impressions of each other so far, and Winston confesses to Julia that he had always believed she was in the Thought Police. Julia does not take this as an attack at all and makes Winston feel that no circumstance in the world can change her feelings towards him
- The landscape in which they set up their love nest reminds Winston of the "Golden Country" (p. 33, l. 1) from his dream
- The fact that Julia has already been in bed with numerous men from the party does not deter Winston. On the contrary - it fuels him further, as he thus rebels against the party's respectability
