Chapter 5-6

Chapter 5

Info

  • page: 300-304
  • place: "Room 101" (p. 276, l. 27) in "the Ministry of Love" (p. 241, l. 2 f.)
  • time: an entire day
  • people: Winston, O'Brien

Content

  • Since Winston senses the change in air pressure, he can estimate that he is in "Room 101" (p. 276, l. 27), far below the earth
  • O'Brien describes "Room 101" (p. 276, l. 27) as "the worst thing in the world" (p. 300, l. 21 f.). However, the nature of cruelty varies depending on the inmate
  • In Winston's case, O'Brien has chosen to torture him with rats, knowing about the protagonist's aversion to these animals. O'Brien announces that he will let the rats out of the cage, just waiting to consume Winston's flesh
  • When Winston is about to be attacked by the rats, he hears himself say that O'Brien should inflict the punishment on Julia instead of him. Winston then falls into unconsciousness and sees O'Brien close the cage again

Chapter 6

Info

  • page: 305-315
  • place: "The Chestnut Tree" (p. 305, l. 2), a local pub Winston often visits
  • time: March 1985
  • people: Winston, Julia

Content

  • In the meantime, Winston has been released from the Ministry of Truth for quite some time. He often stays in the pub "The Chestnut Tree", where he often drinks beyond his thirst
  • He does not have to worry about his material well-being. He has a permanent job, and he no longer has to fear the persecution of the party
  • The brainwash served him and Julia well. The proof is a meeting between the two, during which they both realise that they no longer find each other physically attractive, and they also both confess to having betrayed each other in their moment of greatest fear
  • Even though Winston has by now fully internalised the party's doctrine and is rooting for "Big Brother" (p. 3, l. 22) in the war against the enemy, a dark premonition won't let him go. He is sure that one day he will be shot by the party, although he perceives his former self as false and deluded
