  • Winston is first taken to a conventional prison. After the first interrogations, however, Winston is given a place in the "Ministry of Love" (p. 241, l. 2 f.), where he is tortured with constant bright lighting
  • Within a very short time, Winston is no longer clear-headed. This is due to the lack of food and sleep he experiences in his cell
  • During his time in the "Ministry of Love" (p. 241, l. 2 f.), he meets his former co-worker and neighbour Mr Parsons, who in the meantime, had been snitched to the party by his children
  • In the "Ministry of Love" (p. 241, l. 2 f.), there is "Room 101" (p. 259, line 33), which is described as each individual's hell
  • Winston has to learn that O'Brien is by no means working underground against the party but is fully serving the leader, "Big Brother" (p. 3, l. 22) and shares the totalitarian values of the regime. Together with a few others, O'Brien leads the party and works in the "Ministry of Love" (p. 241, l. 2 f.). O'Brien shows his true colours when he idly watches Winston being beaten up by a guard

  • During his first interrogation, O'Brien is tortured and tortured so much under O'Brien's supervision that he admits to crimes he never committed
  • But that's not the end of Winston, afterwards O'Brien takes over the torture and interrogation
  • O'Brien uses electric shocks to torture Winston. The torturer also says that he has been watching the protagonist for a long time and thinks Winston is sick. The torture is supposed to cure him of his illness
  • The abuse is supposed to cause Winston to change his view of the world and eventually believe everything the godfathers teach him. O'Brien will go over the "right answers" with him in the spirit of the party until Winston's will is broken
  • When O'Brien makes Winston believe that Julia has already betrayed him, Winston's view of things begins to blur, and he slowly starts to believe the lies of the Party head
