- As "Hate Week" (p. 3, l. 16) dawns, Oceania is suddenly no longer at war with Eurasia, but with Eastasia. Instead, Oceania and Eurasia are allied with each other
- Winston now has to rewrite all the documents. He needs to do that, so there is no longer any evidence that Oceania and Eurasia were once at war with each other. This task pushes him to his limits and requires many hours of work
- When the protagonist has finally finished rewriting the documents, he goes to the secret room where Julia is already waiting for him. In the meantime, Goldstein's manifesto from O'Brien has arrived and Winston reads it to Julia
- Julia does not seem as enthusiastic about Goldstein's work as Winston is, as she falls asleep in the middle of the reading. Winston fears that they both cannot hide in the seclusion and idyll of their room for much longer. Suddenly Winston hears a voice from the wall that confirms his fears
- Behind a picture hanging on the wall, a screen suddenly becomes visible, through which Julia and Winston had been bugged the whole time. Not seconds pass, and the men of the party storm into the room and arrest the surprised couple
- The landlord of the small room and owner of the shop, Mr Charrington, had deliberately trapped Winston and Julia and works as a spy for the "Thought Police" (p. 5, l. 4)
