Please note that these solutions are only suggestions. There are various possibilities for argumentation.
- Here we are then.
- Let's talk about mankind's reaction to climate change and how to cope with the consequences
- Let's start with...
- On the one hand / on the other hand
- It must be considered
- In my opinion / I think, personally, ...
- I agree / I disagree
Possible introductions to the topic and the argumentations
- the cartoon shows the reactions of the "rich" when it comes to climate change
- the rich in the cartoon represent the rich "developed" countries
- these representatives are gathered in a lecture hall
- a speaker lectures poor and less developed countries will suffer more from the climate crisis
- the only response to the readers remark is "PHEW! Thank god, I was worried sick..."
Cartoon A:
introduction and short description of the cartoon
introduction and short description of the cartoon
- Despite the strong sarcasm with which the cartoon is endowed, it depicts the current situation very accurately
- as rather poor considered countries such as South Africa or Haiti are suffering from the catastrophic effects of climate change most
- droughts, floods and fires are making life extremely difficult for the people in these countries
- The worst thing about it is that these effects are largely caused by rich industrialised countries
- The rich population, however, has the luxury of turning a blind eye to the effects of climate change
- responsibility must be taken, because just because "we" feel the effects less, does not mean we are less responsible
Cartoon A:

comment
- this cartoon is as well as the first one a critic of the western mindset with regard to climate change
- a tiny so-called hybrid is parked in front of a double garage, next to a huge mansion with three smoking chimneys
- the subject matter addressed in this cartoon is the greenwashing effect
Cartoon B:
introduction and short description of the cartoon
introduction and short description of the cartoon
- the statement of the inhabitants of the house "I tell you, since we bought this hybrid, I feel we're doing our part for the environment" is in strong contrast to their living behaviour
- the strong contrast between the tiny car and the capitalist castle underlines the irony of the statement in the speech bubble
- the cartoon exaggeratedly describes the problem, but it shows a fundamentally problematic way of thinking of the affluent western society
- there has to be a change in the way Western consumers think and then behave
- currently, overconsumption dominates the western world
- the goal should be less allegedly environmentally friendly purchases, but rather the development of strategies for more energy efficiency, for example
Cartoon B:
comment
comment
- the last cartoon is about renewable energy production in general and our inconsistencies in producing it
- The cartoon shows what appears to be a windmill at a standstill, with a huge fan opposite it. Two people are standing in between, the mechanic of the two explains, in response to the question of one, what happens when there is no more wind, that the fans are then pulled in
Cartoon C:
introduction and short description of the cartoon
introduction and short description of the cartoon
- the contradiction is similar to that of the second cartoon
- the large amount of energy generated by fans could probably not even be generated by the wind turbines
- just like the other two cartoons, this one is distinguished by its exaggeration, but it also has a core of truth
- the true potential of renewable energy sources such as water or solar energy should be more fully exploited and the use of fossil fuels slowly replaced by renewable sources
- could be described as greenwashing of politics
Cartoon C:
comment
comment
- take responsibility: climate change concerns every single citizen
- look at the use of private car ownership critically
- the increase in car-sharing would reduce the number of cars
- Holistic strategies for better use and production of renewable energies
- increase sustainability
- producing less waste: the "throwaway culture" of the western population must come to an end; possibilities of donating leftover food; sustainable farming; raising standards of food productions such as meat; decreasing consumption in general
Possible measures
- something must be done now before the consequences of climate change are no longer sustainable
- It is everyone's responsibility, from politics to the individual
- risks like greenwashing must not be underestimated
Conclusion
