Why volunteering matters
"Today’s youth is spoilt and self-centered". Aren’t you tired of hearing this?
Well, I am because it is not the truth. In the past years volunteering amongst the youth has become more and more important. But why?
Young people use voluntary work for various reasons. For instance, as an orientation after school, to try out something new or to give something back to the community.
In Germany, there are a lot of areas where young people work voluntarily. One important line of voluntary work is working with elderly people who have special kinds of needs. Young volunteers can help the elders by spending time with them, having a listening ear, or just making new memories.
This is a great way to benefit from the many valuable stories, lessons, and experiences the older generation can share with young people.
Another line of work is in environmental organizations where young volunteers can get active for our nature and climate. They organize, for instance, cleaning up events, start gardening movements where you learn how to grow food, or help national parks by helping to maintain green areas.
There are many more possibilities for the youth to work voluntarily in, for example, cultural institutions such as theatres or museums.
All this allows the youth an initial insight into different institutions or fields in which they may want to work later on. In Addition, there is also the possibility that the volunteers acquire hands-on experience and useful skills which they will need by then.
Furthermore, volunteering also helps people to build their character in many ways and to improve their social and communicative skills as they will be working in a team or with different kinds of people.
After all, contributing as volunteers do is something worthwhile. You can help people to achieve things or spread awareness about a special topic like our climate. It is a great way to benefit from each other.
In Germany, many young volunteers are currently paying their contribution to our society, to their and our future or a better world.
I would be very interested in how your country deals with voluntary work and if you are a volunteer, what are doing? Where are you? And what is the best part of volunteering?

The most useful skill? English!
The most useful skill I have learned so far is English. The reason is simple: English allows you to communicate with other people and cultures.
I started to learn English at school and still remember the first time I needed it outside of school. I was on vacation with my family when my brother and I met two other children from Italy playing a game on the beach. I wanted to join them, so I walked up to them and asked them if I could join the game. I realized that English is a door opener and if I can speak it fluently, I will be able to connect with many people. From this point on, I started to watch series and movies in English, tried to translate German lyrics into English, and kept talking to people on TikTok, Instagram, or Youtube.
And one of the best side effects was definitely that my grades improved.
Many sources also help to learn and understand the language better: The Internet for example, with Apps like TikTok or Youtube where most of the content creators are originally from America. It still amazes me when I realize that I can understand dialogues in a film without subtitles or when I hear a different foreign accent and still understand the meaning. That doesn’t mean it’s not challenging sometimes, but that makes it all more exciting to learn the language.
I would say all of my efforts have already paid off last year. I was on a student exchange program in India and had so much fun being able to communicate with my host family and classmates fluently without any problems or going to the local movie night where we watched a brand new Bollywood film. And of course, improving my grades is also quite nice!
So you see English is the most useful skill which will help you to communicate around the world and for me, that is one of the best things!
