Two Wheels - One Goal: Ending Poverty

1
For many people in the western world a bicycle is something they use in their free time or to get
2
to school or work. In poorer regions of the world however, have only their two legs people often
3
transport - so a bike can transform lives. and no other WORLD BICYCLE RELIEF means of
4
World Bicycle Relief, a non-profit organisation from Chicago, gives people free bikes. Through
5
this, they can get the healthcare they need, get to school on time and bring more goods to the
6
market.
7
Frederick K. Day, the owner of a company that produces parts for bikes, had the idea after the Indian
8
Ocean tsunami in 2004. He wanted to help the survivors and went to Sri Lanka to give people free
9
bikes for transport in that emergency situation. The bikes made a big difference in people's
10
lives. One man, for example, was now able to make a trip that would normally have taken four
11
hours in just one hour. He was also able to take his little daughter to a doctor more quickly and arrive
12
earlier at the market to sell his goods.
13
Because the bicycles were so helpful in Sri Lanka, Day and his wife founded World Bicycle
14
Relief in 2005. Since then, the organisation has given away more than 656,000 bikes in poor regions
15
around the world. On average, that makes more than three million lives that have been
16
changed through the programme.
17
Especially for girls, having a bike can make a big difference. On top of doing their homework,
18
girls often have to help in the house and look after their younger brothers and sisters. The way to
19
school is usually long. A bike makes going to school a lot easier, faster and also more likely. Which is
20
why 70 per cent of the people who get a free bike from World Bicycle Relief are female.
21
Free bikes also bring positive changes for other groups. Healthcare workers can make 88 per cent
22
more visits to patients and studies in Africa have shown that a bicycle can increase a family's
23
income by up to 35 per cent. The idea works so well that more and more people want to buy
24
these bikes. World Bicycle Relief started a for-profit organisation within the non-profit organisation.
25
They hope their programme can "help break the cycle of poverty and disease" by helping people
26
to help themselves.
