Life in a circus - circus facts

1
Every child knows and loves a circus - tents, trapeze artists, lions, tigers, horses, clowns,
2
fascinating tricks and the smell of cotton candy in the air. Most circuses provide their own
3
electrical power, !arge circuses have their own schools, cafes, stores, laundry and even
4
pastors for Sunday services.
5
But how is life in a circus? A circus is like a small town that moves from one place of
6
exhibition to the next. In past years and still today, some circuses move every day. That's
7
seven towns a week and two performances a day. Others stay at one place for one or two
8
weeks. From the opening in spring until the closing in fall there are usually no days off. You
9
will rarely hear of a show person taking a sick day, the old saying "the show must go on"
10
certainly applies to circus people.
11
Circus life is not an easy one. There are storms, cold, heat, mud, injury and months away
12
from home. Still, if you ask any life-long showman the question "Why do you do it and why
13
not find another job?" he will answer: ''1'11 never give up show business! We do it for a love
14
of the business, of the traditions, of the culture and a love of the circus."
15
And what about the children? Growing up in the circus means that every member of the
16
family is part of the circus right from the very beginning. Playtime often serves as a training
17
for circus children's fl!ture careers. In addition, children have their own duties that must be
18
performed daily. Circus children can't attend normal schools constantly. So often they are
19
home-schooled by a parent or a designated person. Their progress is monitored closely by a
20
school authority.
21
There are dangers connected with being on the road like strong storms. A circus tent is no
22
place to be in a thunderstorm or high winds. Showpeople have to monitor the weather
23
closely and know when dangerous conditions may arise. When people watch a circus
24
performer walking on a thin wire forty feet above the ground, they may think there are many
25
injuries and deaths due to performing mistakes, but that is far from the truth. Accidents are
26
extremely rare.
